However, rarely have societies had success in both creating a testament to their ideas and also forming a long-lasting window through which individuals can understand the issues and debates that shaped the mentality of a bygone era. In the case of Symposium, Plato succeeds in encapsulating the diversity of opinions toward love, or eros, in ancient Greek society. Symposium attempts to chronicle a provocative and lively discussion about the nature of love, which takes on a significantly more controversial form in ancient Greece known as pederasty, as well as its moral and philosophical ramifications. However, while the discussion described in the narrative undoubtedly has its merits, it is the framing narrative which is of particular value due to its ability to contextualize the following speeches and to give the reader a sense of what attitude with which he should approach......
