Introduzione
La relazione tra liberalizzazione degli scambi commerciali e sviluppo è stata oggetto di numerosi studi nel corso dei secoli. La dottrina economica si è spesso misurata nel tentativo di stabilire con certezza quale nesso collegasse queste dinamiche, al fine di scoprire se l'apertura di un dato paese o di una regione geografica ai mercati internazionali potesse rappresentare un rimedio ai mali del sottosviluppo.
Nonostante gli sforzi compiuti in tale direzione, appare molto difficile esprimersi riguardo alla sicurezza del buon esito dei progetti di liberalizzazione degli scambi e apertura dell'economia. Operazioni di questo genere sono infatti caratterizzate da una natura ambivalente: da un lato esse stimolano le attività di scambio e determinano indubbi benefici economici; dall'altro le conseguenze di un'integrazione mal pianificata possono esercitare effetti nefasti a livello economico, sociale e culturale.
