The director of Great Expectations, Alfonso Cuaron, uses symbolism and various film techniques to capture the values of the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.

A theme that was captured in the novel Great Expectations was jealousy. Pip wanted Estella and when she was married to Drummle, he was very jealous. In the film, Alfonso Cuaron has used symbolism to the capture this same theme of jealousy. The colour green is shown constantly throughout the movie from people's clothes to painting to the colours of the houses. This colour green represents jealousy and the infatuation that Finn (Pip) has for Estella. Green constantly comes up so that he audience is constantly reminded of what jealousy and greed can lead to. In the film, Finn is reunited with Estella after seven years from their first meeting. Finn sees her in New York and she is wearing green clothes. Finn is still in love with Estella and this green represents that he wants her. Estella invites Pip to a dinner......
