Chapter#8:Chemical Equations & Reactions 1/11/2008
Section#1: Describing Chemical Reactions
Chemical Reaction- The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances.
Evidence Of A Chemical Reaction:
1. The release or absorption of energy in the form of heat, light, or sound.
2. If energy is released it is considered a product, if it is absorbed, it is considered a reactant.
3. The formation of a solid or gas without a change of state taking place.
4. A change in color, odor, or temperature.
5. A new substance is formed.
Chemical Equations
Reactant- A substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction.
Product- A substance that forms in a chemical reaction.
Example: 2H2 + O2 ³ 2H2
[Reactants] [Products]
= 6CO2 + 12H2O + Energy ³ C6H12O6 + 6H2O + 602
[Reactants] [Products]
