Tajfel's Social Identity Theory and Teacher Professional Development

Abstract
Whilst the significance of teacher professional development is palpable, the concept is still paradoxical in the sense that it possesses two dimensions, individual and social. This article focuses on teachers as professionals. It seeks to discuss some literature related to the issue of professional identity and argue that teachers' professional development is more social in nature than individual. Employing Tajfel's Social Identity Theory as a theoretical framework, it also suggests how teachers should construct their professional identity.
