Dear Editor,
I, like many Americans grew up with a family pet. Jeremy Rifkin tries to explain in his article “A Change Of Heart about Animals�, that animals have feelings too, but to us pet owners, this is a fact that we’ve known forever. Just because animals have feelings too doesn’t mean we need to necessarily need to treat them any better, after all they are livestock. I firmly believe that we have more critical situations that we need to spend our time solving, rather then the emotions running through tomorrow’s dinners head. Situations such as the fight against poverty, and the fact that we don’t know for sure that this is intelligence and not just mimicry, should be addressed before any changes are made.

Its evident looking across the nations that there is still wide-spread poverty. Rifkin explains “In Germany, the government is encouraging pig farmers to provide pigs with toys.� While this may help to reduce fights, simply its money that can elsewhere......
