“He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command.” - Machiacelli. Machiacelli quote states that if a person, in this context being a leader, wishes to be obeyed, he in turn must know how to give orders and command. This does not mean one must simply give commands, he must be able to command his emotions; be it happiness or sadness, fear or lack of, boldness or cowardness. Throughout the book, a leader displays such command. Thus, Machiacelli’s quote reflects T.H White’s attitude towards those who rule in his book, Once And Future King. The symbol, the talons of a animal, the tone of light-heartedness and optimism, and the statement of theme, “To be leader, one needs not be of high class, but of high intellect and brave heart”, in Book I “The Sword In The Stone”(SITS), all prove T.H White’s attitude towards the quintessence of a ruler, as best summed up by Machiacelli.
