War On Drugs Has Failed

Having spent over $400 billion over the course of the American drug prohibition effort, it might be prudent to ask the question, "Are we making any progress?" ("Ron"). Amazingly, the answer from experts on both sides of the issue is a resounding "no." It is clear at this point that the War on Drugs has ultimately failed, while the collateral consequences of pursuing drug prohibition have left America in a disastrous state, rife with both economic and social problems.
While American drug prohibition was in motion via legislation as early as 1875 with the enactment of restrictions on opium, our modern day War on Drugs was officially ushered in by President Nixon on June 17th of 1971. On that day, Nixon declared drug abuse to be "public enemy number one in the United States," and two years later founded the Drug Enforcement Administration -- a law enforcement agency whose purpose was and is to combat the war on drugs ("Thirty").
