That wall must be kept high and impregnable.” The separation of church and state is a legal and political principal derived from the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The phrase “separation of church and state” is never actually stated in the Constitution but was first mentioned in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists in 1802. America’s first immigrants depended on their religion, and as anyone would imagine, religion can cause a massive conflict if not kept in check. Some religions actually believe that causing harm or inflicting pain on another of opposite belief is the right thing to do.
