The Influence Of The Mafia On The Social, Moral And Economic Development Of The United States Of America

The American Mafia is a secret crime organisation that developed during the early 20th century from the growing numbers of Italian and Sicilian immigrants moving to the United States. As the lowest socio-economic group, portions of their population turned to crime to get ahead, eventually becoming the largest and most powerful group in American organised crime.
Throughout their existence, the Mafia has had a concurrent positive and negative influence on the social, moral and economic development of the United States of America. However, due to the two contrasting stereotypes of the Mafia, this is an area subject to debate. The first of the stereotypes portrays them as a band of Machiavellian bloodthirsty and violent criminals, which suggests they had a negative influence on America. The second portrays them as ‘Godfather’ like figures, leading with intelligence and care, and only using violence when absolutely necessary, suggesting a positive influence.
