The ongoing conflict between nation of Israel and the Palestinian people has become more and more intense since the Hamas party seized control of the Palestinian Legislative Council in the 2006 Parliamentary elections. Although the Israeli government has made significant concessions over disputed territories, the frequency of Hamas-sponsored attacks against Israeli civilians and military targets has increased greatly over the past two years.
According to the Hamas charter, it believes that all people, regardless of religious affiliation, can co-exist in the territory it calls Palestine, provided that such coexistence is under a government based on Islam.
