Kansas Imbroglio

The long battle for the control of the territory of Kansas, also known as Bleeding Kansas, was an introduction to the American Civil War. It was not the only cause of the war, but the political uneasiness that emerged from the passage of the Kansas – Nebraska Act caused a sometimes hostile confrontation between pro- and antislavery groups in Kansas and increased tensions nationwide.

Kansas was a territory in shambles prior to 1854. It was home to numerous Indian tribes. As part of Indian Country, this land was “shared” after 1830 with about 20 various tribes from east of the Mississippi River, they were resettled west of Missouri under the federal government’s Indian removal policy.

The political uneasiness that arose from the passage of the Kansas – Nebraska Bill caused serious conflict in Kansas. At the national level, the perception about what was going in the territory was more important than reality. Newspapers on the East Coast gave sensational attention......
