How can we Respect diversity and create a common American culture?
As I read the assignment I found myself embarrassed to be a white mainstream American, I even found myself emotional at times.. In the past diversity whether race, culture, sex, or ability was not respected what so ever. I knew this was the truth but after reading “A Talk to Teachers” (1963) by James Baldwin, I found out that African Americans were treated as animals and in order to justify this the white republic had to brainwash itself into believing that they were indeed animals and deserved to be treated this way. The Negro was kept in his place.
In a time even closer to today African American culture was not includes in common American culture and history. Many parts of the African American history, among other groups such as women, were left out of the classroom, deeming it unimportant to the mainstream American culture.
