The impact of parenting style on my own development
My parents provided me with a clear understanding of what was expected of me and were very supportive throughout my development as a child. I would identify my parent’s style of parenting as authoritative. This style is characterized by high expectations of conformity and compliance to parental rules and directions, an open dialogue about those rules and behaviors and a child-center approach. Authoritative parents unlike authoritarian parents encourage the child to be independent (Feldman 2008). Authoritative parents are not usually controlling allowing the child to explore more freely. Authoritative parents set limits, demands maturity, but when punishing a child; the parent will always explain his or her motive for their punishment.
