The teenage years are also called adolescence. During this time, the teenager will see the greatest amount of growth in height and weight. For both boys and girls, adolescence is a time for growth spurts and puberty changes. An adolescent may grow several inches in several months followed by a period of very slow growth, and then have another growth spurt (Berger, 2005). Changes with puberty may occur gradually or several signs may become visible at the same time. Puberty is also the period of time when children begin to mature biologically, psychologically, socially and cognitively (Kroeger, 2000). Girls start to grow into women and boys into men.
During puberty, sexual and other physical maturation occurs due to hormonal changes. As both sexes near puberty, a gland in the brain called the pituitary gland increases the secretion of a hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). In girls, FSH activates the......
