In 1674, an inquisitive Dutch drapery merchant discovered the world of microbes through a
magnifying glass while peering into lake water. Anton van Leeuwenhoek , discovered the numerous
living bacteria and described their shapes. With this discovery, the scientific world was open to a new
explanation for the diseases plaguing the world’s population in the past, and would help to explain and
perhaps prevent future outbreaks. From this finding, the study of microbiology was born.
Microbiology is defined as: the study of microorganisms and other agents,
that can only be seen with the aid of a microscope. These microorganisms are both diverse and
threatening diseases, and yet also important in the medical field for vaccinations and antibiotic
treatments. In order to develop such treatment, the understanding of the origin and effects of these
