Salem, Massachusetts, 1692. A puritan, theocratic village of mostly poor famers. People live the simple life in these parts, and have to support themselves by making their own clothing, planting vegetables and raising meat. Religion is everything in this town, it is illegal not attend church on a Sunday and the Devil was deemed as real as God and to be behind every misfortune. This is the time and setting in which Arthur Miller was to base his play, The Crucible, so you may ask what relevance would such a text set in a somewhat backward society have today?
