Nearly 47 million Americans, or 16 percent of the population, were without health insurance in 2005, the latest government data available.1 Whether or not someone has health insurance largely depends on the kind of work they do and how old they are. Two-thirds of Americans get health insurance from their employer, while nearly all the elderly can get coverage under the government's Medicare program. The government's Medicaid program offers coverage to 40 million of the poorest Americans, but there are strict limits on income. Those most likely to be left out, according to Census Bureau statistics, are people in low-wage jobs or who work for small businesses that can't afford health benefits. After independently researching 5 separate plans it became evident why there is such controversy in the U.S. regarding healhcare.
