Their Eyes Were Watching God
Identity if formed through ones actions and experiences. Janie, one of the characters in the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, identity is similar to a mules and pear tree’s identity. The mule, the pare tree, and Janie are very alike in terms of their living experiences. In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Hurtson, uses symbolism to express how Janie’s identity is formed throughout her experiences.
For instance, in chapter 2 Janie is sitting under a pare tree. A pare tree tends to blossom when its ready, mostly during the springtime, but as it comes to winter is starts to loose everything it has and its back to where it started as nothing but bark and branches. The pear tree repeats itself through this process over and over again. Also, since the pear tree is sweet, bees will eventually surround it, as implied in the chapter that the bees will be attracted to the tree (10-11).
