Existentialism

Sartre argued that existentialism is atheistic. That is to say that existentialism involves no belief in a supreme divine being, and there is no need to ponder the existence of a god. It is man who lays down the foundations of morality and so must make his own choices in life. To exist is to have the freedom to choose between the many pathways in life and deal with any good and bad outcomes that may occur in the process.

Sartre suggested that if you were to take a devout Christian and remove their belief system or their faith, that they would then see no reason to continue living as there would be no light at the end of the tunnel, and no ultimate rule-maker to answer to at end of one’s life. They would however, continue to live on unless of course they were to take matters into their own hands. In saying this, Sartre was trying to point out that one does not need to bring religion into the picture to establish human existence. By reviewing Sartre’s lecture “Existentialism......
