Allegro From L’Autunno Op.8 No.3 By Vivaldi: Mintz Vs. Kennedy
Allegro is the first movement of L’Autunno (commonly referred to as Autumn) from the Four Seasons, one of Antonio Vivaldi’s most celebrated and recited works. Since its composition, many virtuoso violinists have performed this Baroque standard and have created countless interpretations of the piece. Israeli violinist Shlomo Mintz and British violinist Nigel Kennedy are amongst the musicians who have performed this work with contrasting interpretations. Based on the visual recordings of Mintz’s 1982 performance with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Kennedy’s 1989 collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra, it is evident that Mintz’s performance of Allegro from Autumn was a traditional and conventional interpretation of the work whereas in Kennedy’s performance, he extended upon the established techniques and practices of Baroque recital.
