It is imperative that all countries make an immediate and substantial improvement in the reduction, security and accessibility of their stocks of materials and weapons that can be used for nuclear purposes, most importantly including plutonium and uranium. The countries currently known to possess nuclear stockpiles and/or capabilities include China, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, North Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Although the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) continues to be a relatively comprehensive agreement identifying several measures that aim to reduce and prevent nuclear energy and weapons technologies, the world’s confidence in the NPT has been weakened over the years. A major factor in this weakening is due to the fact that key nuclear powers have been failing to meet their own disarmament obligations and commitments.
