INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
1. International borders have played a prominent part in shaping human history among sovereign states all over the world. For example, in Europe it played a key role in the rise and fall of states, in the causes of some wars as well as their resolution, and in the drawing and re-drawing of many boundaries. In Africa, a major factor in the boundary disputes was the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, which laid down rules that governed the scramble and subsequent partition of the continent. However, because many of the borders that were inherited from the colonizers were arbitrary, they laid the foundations for numerous boundary disputes in Africa since then. 1
