A Seperate Peace Essay

An anonymous author once said “In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers”. This quote holds true in the fictional novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Good stories need conflict; the most basic literary conflict is the struggle between forces of good and evil. Though the forces of evil must prevail at times in order to further the plot and develop the conflict, they can never triumph in the end. Evil may win the battle from time to time, but good will win the war. The British may have shown dominance over the Ibo culture, but some Ibo customs still exist among Umofia; such as marriage ceremonies and growing yams. By the end of book Okonkwo, a representative of the Ibo culture, was never defeated. Although he committed suicide, this was an honorable sacrifice. Achebe uses theme and symbolism to prove this quote.
