Calorie Restriction The Fountain Of Youth?

In an article entitled “Iron Will – Can a diet of a quarter fewer calories than a body needs lead Boomers to that ever elusive fountain of youth?” published in the San Francisco Chronicle on September 2, 2007 (1), the author, Katherine Seligman discusses the theory that if humans restrict their energy consumption to a quarter less than the body requires it will increase their life span. In this article Seligman interviews a handful of men who practice Calorie Restriction (“CR”), and some people close to them who don’t. The author also refers to several studies on CR, quoting their findings although no journal articles were formally cited. The author concludes with examples of the daily food intake of some of the interviewees. Based on this article, should we all start starving ourselves in order to live longer lives? Not quite yet.
Although Seligman attempts to argue both sides of the CR debate, she concentrates mainly on the side supporting CR. Seligman only briefly......
