Orientalism is defined as something associated with or characteristic of Asia or Asians by the dictionary on the Thomson Gale power search in the University library. According to the Wikipedia Orientalism is the study of Near and Far Eastern societies and cultures. In the 18th and 19th centuries Orientalism came to negative meanings when referring to Eastern cultures and societies. Orientalism simply put is prejudice towards any person in the near and far east. So with all of that said the characteristics of Orientalism would be how one refers to the Far East or Near East countries, their beliefs, art and ways of life.
Orientalism has evolved into prejudice and discrimination among the Muslim and Arab Americans because of their general geographical ancestor’s homeland. Since Muslims and Arabs originally came from the Eastern countries Orientalism fits here. The start of this separation between the West and the East seems to have started when the rise of Christianity and Islam......
