First Outbreak of the Black Death
History is the study of events that happened in the past. History is a chronological record and written documentations of the actions of a particular culture. History not only highlights the important events of the time, but also explains why the events and the outcomes occurred. Although history is commonly used to refer to events which happened earlier in time, 'history' in academic study is either the study of the past or the product of our attempts to understand the past, rather than the past itself (History definition, 2008).
The Black Death was one of the first plagues of recorded history, with death rates in Western Europe exceeding 70%. The plague spread along trade routes and battlefields. In 1347, the Black death reached Naples and Genoa, and from there it rapidly spread across western Europe, striking heavily populated cities, such as Vienna and Paris, and isolated rural villages.
