Puerto Ricans did not experience colonization or immigration into the United States, but rather internal migration. Since 1917, Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens that have most benefits of being citizens but while living in Puerto Rico, cannot vote in presidential or congressional elections (“Immigration…Puerto Rican/Cuban”, n.d.). Because of their U.S. citizen status, Puerto Ricans are able to travel freely within all 50 states as Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States.
Puerto Ricans have experienced prejudice, segregation and racism since their arrival in the United States and still do in some parts of the United States today. The how in question is because of the adoption of the term Latino. The broad term of Latino lumps all countries of Hispanic origin together by visual identity.
