Upton Sinclair’s book, The Jungle, distinctly follows the story of Jurgis Rudkus, an immigrant from Lithuania who traveled to Chicago with several members of his family in search of jobs. They believed that this “American Dream” would bring them freedom and wealth, but instead find themselves living in the slums of the slaughterhouse section of the city otherwise known as Packingtown. The family would go through agonizing struggles to support themselves and survive, and most of the adult family members were working with the exception of one who had to watch over the children. Even Jurgis’ father Antanas was working in old age, but the family was eventually shattered by the greedy and corrupt ways of the American government. Also known as a “muckraking masterpiece”, this novel unveils the unfortunate casualties of what kept capitalism intact and running.......
