The War On Drugs Feat Or Failure
The war on drugs has been fought since the start of the 1900s. Many people have strong opinions whether to continue the war on drugs or give it up as a failed attempt. I believe that the war on drugs and the drug policy is not working and should be changed. The policy is flawed and it is costing the taxpayers billions of dollars a year. When there are cheaper and more effective means of detouring people from using drugs.
The war on drugs officially started when Richard Nixon was president. Some people believe that the war on drugs started with prohibition and the subsequent decade when marijuana and opiates were declared habit forming and potentially dangerous. “Historians view Prohibition as an unsuccessful social experiment. Crime rates rose sharply while consumption of alcohol increased” .( Issitt, Micah) along with the increase in alcohol use many people switched to harder and more expensive drugs, which defeats one of the goals of prohibition which was to lower poverty......
