A Community of Writers, A Workshop Course in Writing is a trove of exercises and teaching suggestions. It is written for both students and writing instructors. The premise is that as writers and students and instructors we are in a community together. There are many ways we can interact as community members. Elbow and Belanoff provide a lot of pedagogical suggestions and strategies to facilitate interesting, productive, interactive, participation-promoting individual and group exercises.
This book offers 16 central workshops with one to two-week suggestions for activities and writing assignments tailored to different features of the writing process. On top of these central 16 there are also 12 mini-workshop suggestions tailored to smaller features of writing issues that can be assigned as outside class-time activities or reading assignments, or used in a single class meeting.
