The practice of marketing is almost as old as humanity itself. Marketing was originally simply a gathering place where people with a supply performed a service with those who desired the item or service, at a pre-arranged time. However, in professional usage the term marketing has a much wider meaning and involves complex issues. Marketing is accused of creating ruthless exploitation of both consumers and workers by treating people as commodities whose purpose is to consume. ¬
Most marketers believe that marketing techniques themselves are amoral. While it is ethically neutral, it can be used for negative purposes, but it can also have a dramatically positive influence on consumer welfare. This apparent love-hate relationship is proof in itself that even skeptics find it difficult to deny the contribution that marketing has made and can make to customer satisfaction and economic value.
