Crime is an inevitable occurrence that happens all the time and throughout the world, but there are various degrees of severity to which a crime can be defined, ranging from petty crimes to felonies, for determination of a justifying punishment, which can vary from fines to the death penalty. Crime has been around since early man decided something was wrong and should happen. Throughout time it has changed greatly and yet has the same basic elements: criminal action, accusation, trial, and conviction. Trial was not a huge part of the process in previous times, and focused more on conviction of the accused.
The earliest written evidence of law and order is from the Mesopotamian Era, during the rule of Hammurabi. His rules, called the Codes of Hammurabi, stated a list of injustices and their justifications that would take place. The most well known law from this time period is "An eye for and Eye."
