In 1984, George Orwell utilizes harsh displays of physical and psychological torture to bring attention to the dangers of a totalitarian government.

With his vivid depiction of the state of Oceania, Orwell instills a harsh potential reality of psychological oppression. The government of Oceania prevents any type of independent thought by implementing overwhelming propaganda, reducing range of thought, and manipulation of past events. Orwell demonstrates this early in the novel through Winston Smith, who thinks, "If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened - that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death" (Book 1; Ch. 3). Winston reflects on the ability of Big Brother to control every aspect of the past simply by making everything that it said true.
