The Crucible
I, Deputy Governor Danforth, have come to the conclusion that the trials will be continued for those accused and those that have not confessed will be executed on schedule. There are many reasons for my decision. The frst reason for this decision is that twelve people have already been executed; if the court halts all activity then the public will lose their trust n me and my integrity. Another reason for the continuation of the executions is that there is no proof for their innocence. The girls condemned them and there is no indication of an ulterior motive from the girls, indeed, John Proctor condemned himself when he exclaimed, “God is Dead!” For him to make such an unholy statement proves that the Devil dwells in him. Even if, God forbid, the accused are innocent it is best that they are executed so that the court retains its power and respect.
