Welfare: The Source Of Dependency?
What does it mean that a government should treat its members equal? Does it mean that resources should be distributed equally? Ronald Dworkin, in his view of liberalism, proposes several government and market remedies to answer these questions. The staunch conservative, however, would argue against Dworkin’s suggestions, reminding us of man’s imperfect obligation to others.
Dworkin’s theories are based on the supposition that government is neutral on what is considered to be the good life. This is in essence a type of “rough equality,” leaving each person to choose his distribution without any bearing that his overall share will be enlarged or inhibited by choosing a more or less fruitful life. Dworkin then goes on to argue that if everyone had the same conception of “the good life,” government’s duty would be to simply maximize the production of those goods that favor everyone.
