Early Perspectives

Some of the earliest illustrations of historical events are in rock carvings and wall paintings of in Africa and the present day Middle East. In the Middle East, both the Egyptians and the Assyrians document their history on the walls of tombs, palaces, and other prominent structures. The reliefs of the Assyrians and the Egyptians depict common practices and ceremonies and significant events in history such as war. In their depictions of war, the artist, as Omen says in “Early Military Pictures,” “overemphasize (the) patron of the moment or ancestral hero of their race…with small regard for details of historical accuracy.” Such examples include, Sennacherib’s Enemies Impaled, shown on page 338 of Omen’s article, where the oversized image of the Assyrian king is shown shooting arrows at several enemy who have been impaled on pikes. Another example of what Rabb calls “triumphalism,” is the Egyptian king, Rameses II, shown in one of the reliefs at his tomb,......
