Genetic Screening
Genetic screening allows us to diagnose any genetic diseases caused by a single-gene also known as mendelian, multifactorial, chromosomal structural abnormalities and mitochondrial. This screening is very useful in detecting changes in chromosomes, genes and proteins to identify any genetic disorder and in determining a person’s chance in developing or passing on a genetic disorder to his or her offspring. There are many types of genetic screening with the advancement of technologies. Some examples are prenatal screening and neonatal screening.
Prenatal screening is a test in detecting genetic abnormalities in the foetus. The objectives of prenatal screening is also to allow termination of pregnancy at early stage, gives time to parents and families to prepare for the baby’s special needs, enable early treatment to the affected babies and to reduce anxiety for couples with high risk of having abnormality child.
