What differentiated Dell from its competitors was not the direct sales channel it has used since it was established in 1984 since Getaway 2000 also took orders from customers and then shipped the final tailored product directly to them. The activities that made Dell unique were the production and logistics it handled.
Dell used a production and logistics structure that enabled it to have a cost advantage over its competitors. This structure consisted that after Dell received an order for a new machine, this order was electronically send to the most appropriate facility which was in charge of assembling the product, installing the software and testing it before a third party courier delivered the final product to the customer. Dell had manufacturing facilities strategically located all around the world such as in North and South America, Europe and Asia, which allowed it to minimize the delivery time and the cost of the product.
