The Wife of Bath as a Wicked Wife

Love and marriage are two topics that have been discussed, debated, and criticized for centuries on end. Geoffrey Chaucer provides his readers with a self-proclaimed expert on these matters: namely, The Wife of Bath, as she tells her stories of being a married woman. She conveys the tribulations, but also the happiness that comes with marriage. The Wife of Bath reveals many interesting opinions of her own, making her seem like a terrible wife. Chaucer’s character, the Wife of Bath, is portrayed as a wicked wife through her characteristics and her attitudes on marriage.
In the middle ages, the Church gives very specific guidelines that a woman should follow; the Wife of Bath’s characteristics and behaviors stray from this greatly. According to the Church, a wife should be modest and subservient. She should always complete her domestic duties as well as raise the children.
