Early Onset Bipolar Disorder (EOBPD) is a very controversial diagnosis that has sometimes been overlooked in the past. The mental health community is beginning to understand that it is possible for children to have bipolar disorder. This has sent pediatric doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors scrambling to figure out what types of therapy and medication can be used to help these children.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately 7% of children seen in psychiatric facilities do meet the criteria to be diagnosed as bipolar.
