My Thoughts on HIV/AIDS Prevention Techniques

In my opinion, HIV/AIDS prevention has been the most visible issue dealt with throughout my time here at Spelman. I find this interesting because in talking with friends that do not attend an HBCU, they have not recognized as much HIV/AIDS talk on their campuses, but rather discussions dealing with drugs and other issues affecting America’s youth. Evidently, HIV/AIDS is truly affecting African American youth, and steps must continue to be taken to protect our lives.
While African American’s account for only 12.3% of the United States population, yet make up 50% of HIV/AIDS cases, it is imperative that we become conscious of various prevention methods. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), unlike Cancer and other diseases of the sort with no known causes, is a preventable disease generally diagnosed in people who engage in risky behaviors.
