RADIOISOTOPES IN MEDICINE
Radioisotopes are used in nuclear medicine to allow physicians to explore bodily structures and functions in the living body with minimizing the invasion to the patient they are operating on. Radioisotopes are also used in radiotherapy to treat some cancers and other medical conditions that require destruction of harmful cells.
Of the 30 million people who are hospitalized each year in the United States, 1/3 is treated with nuclear medicine. More than 10 million nuclear-medicine procedures are performed on patients and more than 100 million nuclear-medicine tests are performed each year in the United States alone. A comparable number of such procedures are performed in the rest of the world.
