Both stimulants, cocaine and amphetamine, were first used in the United States as medication to treat physical and psychological ailments. They manipulate the brain’s neurotransmitter system and produce feelings of euphoria, increased energy and well being in users. Extreme or extended use of either stimulant can cause psychosis although higher amphetamine doses lend to acute behavioral toxicity (i.e. panic, suspicion, paranoia and even violence).
Many occasional cocaine abusers increase their usage to the point of acute toxicity. Rapid increase in cocaine doses intensely stimulates the Central Nervous System and can lead to respiratory and/or cardiac arrest.
