I am going to admit right off that I was not particularly excited about seeing an Afro-Peruvian Sextet. I thought it was going to be horribly boring music that would be of no interest to me. I was shocked the moment I heard the fusion of instruments, some of which were strange to me. It turned out to be the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
The instruments that were interesting and new to me were the cajon, cajita, and the strangest was the quijada. These are the percussion instruments of the band. The cajon can be purchased for around $175.00 and is a wood box with a thin plywood face that is slapped with the hands. It came in to play in the early 1800’s and is now the most used Afro-Peruvian instrument of the 20th century. The cajita goes for about $75.00 and is a wooden box with a lid and is smaller than the cajon. This instrument originated from collection boxes in the churches of Peru.
