The Right to Die
Dying, for most Americans, has become far more complicated than it once was. Until recently, end-of-life decisions mostly involved trying to stay alive as long as possible, but today, we are lucky if we are able to “just die.” A century ago, most people died at home of illnesses that medicine could do little to prevent. Until the 1940’s, medical care was often just comfort care, alleviating pain whenever possible, but during the last fifty some years, medicine has become increasingly capable of postponing death. Now technology has created choices for dying patients and their families. The choices it can create raise basic questions about human dignity and as to what constitutes a "good death." In most cases, difficult decisions have to be made about when to stop medical treatment.
Today, most people die in hospitals or institutions where the staff makes a courageous effort to keep them alive until there is no reasonable chance of recovery. For many......
