Johannes Kepler
Kepler was born on December 27, 1571 in Germany. He was born a
sickly child to his poor Lutheran parents. It became evident early on that he
posessed intelligence, and attended the University of Tubingen on a scholarship
to study Lutheran ministry. It was during his education here he became fond of
the ideas of Copernicus, and in 1597 wrote his first defense of the Copernican
system, called Mysterium Cosmographicum.
Kepler, himself, did not adhere to the Lutheran docterines, and was
therefore excommunicated from the Lutheran sacrament. However, he refused
to convert to Catholicism and had no refuge in the Thirty-Years War.
Perhaps it was destiny that Kepler was forced to leave his teaching
position at the Graz and ends up moving to Prague and working for Danish
astronomer Tycho Brahe. When Tycho died in 1601, he left all his findings to
Kepler, who was dubbed the imperial mathematician.
