Stem Cell Research

A stem cell has the ability to divide or self replicate for an indefinite period of time, often throughout the life of the organism (Sell, 2003). When given the right signals and under the right conditions, stem cells can form many different cell types that make up that organism (Kirschstein and Skirboll, 2001). Stem cells have the potential to develop into mature cells that have characteristic shapes and specialized functions, such as heart cells, skin cells, nerve cells, and bone cells (Kirschstein and Skirboll, 2001). Stem cells maybe be the cure or may assist in finding a cure for many health and serious medical conditions such as cancer, birth defects, spinal cord injuries, strokes, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, arthritis, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases (Kirschstein and Skirboll, 2001).
