Predicting the future depends on understanding the present and as a new millennium begins, it is said that almost one-fourth of the world’s population can currently communicate to some degree in English. It has become the common language in almost every undertaking, from science to air traffic control, from international business to war. It has also consolidated its dominance as the language of the Internet.

Though it is true that there are more native speakers of Chinese or Spanish than English, it is the latter they speak when talking across cultures. However, as English continues to spread, some linguists claim that it is fragmenting, as Latin did, into a family of dialects and perhaps eventually into fully fledged languages – known as “Englishes or English Languages”. (Mc Arthur 1998, p. xvii)
