Pham writes with a passion for his subject, in this case, the youthful soldiers of Sierra Leone, who had been part of one of the most "brutal and effective insurgencies in the world, one whose strategy was predicated on terror in its most primordial expression." He speaks of the youths of Sierra Leone, many of whom were barely teenagers, who rose up against the government as part of the Revolutionary United Front. Sierra Leone achieved its independence from British rule in 1961 under the leadership of Sir Milton Margai and the Sierra Leone People's Party. During its time under British rule, Sierra Leone adopted a parliamentary democracy, which was taken over by the All People's Congress after the elections of 1967.
